Core Aeration vs Spikes
We use core aeration which removes a core of the lawn allowing for the soil to decompress, moisture/oxygen to enter the soil, and for seed to fall into the newly created hole presenting an optimal germination condition. We do two passes over the lawn to ensure that the entire lawn is aerated and no spots are missed due to a wider pass of the aerator.
When spikes are used they compact the soil more in those spots. Yes they create a hole, but the soil is compacted around the hole causing more issues than if the aeration was not completed in the first place. You want the soil to expand for roots to grow, spikes push the soil closer together to make the hole.
Making sure that you have a good seed blend is important. The seed that we use is a specific blend from our suppliers that mixed for the Richmond Virginia area. It is fescue blend which allows for different species of fescue grass to grow ensuring that your lawn will have the best chance for staying green no matter the conditions of shade/sun or wet/dry. Although it is better to have specific grasses for each area a blend will make the lawn look the same everywhere rather than different shades of "green" in all the parts of the lawn.
We also make sure that the seed we use is not been stored for a long period of time. Testing for seed germination is also important. These are all things done by our supplier to ensure we are using a great product. The seed we use is tested to ensure there are no noxious weed seeds, our current shipment has a 0.00% on the bag test slip.
Overseeding or re seeding your lawn is a regular maintenance for keeping a great looking lawn. When we overseed your lawn we do it in two passes, opposite directions, to prevent striping from seeding being missed in one pass. Our process is to use approximately 4lbs of seed per 1000 sq feet for established lawns. If there is a request, we can overseed twice the amount for lawns that need more attention for the cost of just the seed.
Aeration and overseeding should be done once a year for established lawns in the late summer early fall (Aug 15-Sept 15) is the best time to complete this service. This allows time for the seeds to germinate, grow roots, and start to get mature before it goes dormant for the winter.
The other time is in the spring for lawns that need extra help. Although you can aerate and overseed any time as long as you follow the instructions given after the service is completed.
